What is Prosthodontics

What a prosthodontist actually does

Most people have never heard the word, and that is completely fine. A prosthodontist is simply the dentist who specialises in restoring and replacing teeth. It is one of only a small number of recognised dental specialisms, and it takes years of extra training beyond dental school to hold the title. Where you might see it called restorative dentistry, or full-mouth reconstruction for bigger cases, it all comes down to the same thing: rebuilding teeth so they work, last and look right.

Dr Michael Boulis is on the General Dental Council specialist register for prosthodontics (GDC 78828). For you, that means the tricky cases, the worn-down bites, the failing old work, the several missing teeth at once, are planned and handled here in Bromley rather than referred away. It often starts with dental implants, but the real skill is in the plan behind them.

Specialist

When it is worth seeing a specialist, not just a general dentist

A good general dentist looks after each tooth well. A prosthodontist looks at how your whole bite works together, which matters most when:

Teeth are worn short, chipped or breaking, and you want it solved once, properly
Old crowns or bridges are failing, discoloured or no longer fitting
You are missing a single tooth, several teeth, or a full arch
Dental work done elsewhere has let you down or keeps needing repair
Years of grinding have changed your bite, or dentures have never felt right
Restoration

The restorations Dr Boulis plans and makes

Every plan is built around what your mouth actually needs, using the full range of restorative options:

Dental implants and All-on-4 to replace anything from one gap to a full arch
Crowns and bridges to restore and protect damaged or heavily filled teeth
Dentures, including implanted dentures, for stability without adhesive
Veneers where the concern is mainly how your front teeth look
Full-mouth restoration when several problems are best solved together as one coordinated plan

Meet the specialist who will plan your treatment

Your treatment is led by Dr Michael Boulis, a registered specialist prosthodontist who trained at the Eastman Dental Institute, holds a postgraduate master’s from King’s College London, and has a 98% success rate with dental implants. He also does much of the lab work himself, which is unusual and tells you how hands-on the care is. Patients tend to mention the same thing: he takes the time to explain, and nothing feels rushed.

“Michael knows his stuff and talks you through everything.”

Why choose us

Why have your treatment at Bella Dental

Plenty of practices offer crowns, implants and dentures. A few things make the difference here:

A genuine specialist, not a general dentist doing the occasional complex case
Our own on-site lab, so your new teeth are designed and made in the same building
Digital planning with TRIOS scans and CBCT imaging for precision and predictability
Complex and failed-elsewhere cases welcomed, not turned away
Aftercare that follows up, with comfort care bags for implant patients and a check-in call to see how you are
A calm, spa-like practice on Bromley High Street, a minute from Bromley South and easy to reach from Beckenham and Orpington

The advantage of our on-site lab

Most practices post your crowns, bridges and dentures to an outside lab and wait days for them to come back. We do not. Our technicians work alongside Dr Boulis in the same building, so shade, shape and fit are refined directly, often while you are still in the chair. It is faster, more precise, and a big reason patients notice the quality.

“He even has a lab in the practice who can make the teeth in very short time, I really thank my lucky stars for having met him.”

Frequently asked questions about prosthodontics and restorative dentistry

Everything patients usually ask before starting their treatment. Can't see your question? We're happy to talk it through.

What does a prosthodontist do that a general dentist doesn’t?

General dentists do excellent routine and restorative care. A specialist prosthodontist has three or more years of extra training focused only on restoring and replacing teeth, and plans your whole bite as one system rather than tooth by tooth. At Bella Dental that planning happens alongside our on-site lab, so the design and fit of your new teeth are controlled from start to finish.

Do I need a referral to see the prosthodontist?

No. You can book directly, whether or not you are already a patient, and Donatella will help arrange the right first appointment. Other dentists are also welcome to refer patients to us for prosthodontic and implant work.

Can you fix dental work that has failed somewhere else?

Very often, yes. Rescuing and redoing ageing or failed work is a core part of what a prosthodontist does. Bring your history, we will take a CBCT scan and assess honestly, and tell you straight what can and cannot be done.

How long will my treatment take?

It depends on the work. Some restorations are completed within a week because we make them on-site; implants need a few months to heal between stages. You will get a realistic timeline at your first visit, not a vague guess.

I’m really nervous - can you still help me?

Absolutely, and you would not be the first. We take everything at your pace, explain each step before we do it, and provide comfort care bags afterwards. Read more about our care for nervous patients, including sedation arranged through a specialist third-party provider.
