Root canal treatment has a terrible reputation it doesn't deserve. Mention it to most people and they'll wince, make a joke about dental torture, or share horror stories they've heard from someone's cousin's friend. The reality? Modern root canal treatment is nothing like the outdated nightmare people imagine.

At Bella Dental in Bromley, our experienced team treats root canal infections routinely, using techniques and technology that make the process comfortable and efficient. Dr Michael Boulis and our general dentistry practitioners work together to handle everything from straightforward cases to more complex situations requiring specialist expertise.

If you're experiencing tooth pain or have been told you need root canal treatment, understanding what actually happens can ease a lot of anxiety.

Why Root Canals Have Such a Bad Reputation

Most of the fear around root canal treatment comes from outdated information. Decades ago, before modern anaesthetics and techniques, the procedure could be uncomfortable. People remember stories from that era and assume nothing has changed.

The other issue? People associate root canal treatment with the pain that brought them to the dentist in the first place. The infection hurts terribly, so they assume the treatment must hurt too. Actually, it's the infection causing pain—the treatment relieves it.

What Actually Happens During Root Canal Infection

Understanding the Problem

Your tooth has a hard outer shell of enamel and an inner layer of dentine. Below those protective layers sits the pulp—living tissue containing blood vessels and nerves. When bacteria reach the pulp, usually through deep decay or a crack, infection develops.

An infected pulp causes significant pain. The tissue swells, but it's trapped inside your tooth with nowhere to expand, creating intense pressure. The pain often throbs in time with your heartbeat. Hot and cold sensitivity becomes extreme. Sometimes the pain radiates to your jaw, ear, or other teeth.

Left untreated, the infection spreads beyond the tooth into the surrounding bone. An abscess forms—a pocket of pus that can cause facial swelling, fever, and serious complications.

Why Saving the Tooth Matters

You might wonder why we don't just extract infected teeth rather than going through root canal treatment. Several good reasons exist.

Your natural teeth are worth keeping. They function better than any replacement, no matter how good modern implants and bridges have become. They maintain bone in your jaw. They don't require special cleaning routines. And they preserve the natural structure of your mouth.

Extraction also has consequences. Adjacent teeth can shift. The gap affects how you bite. Bone loss occurs where the tooth was removed. Replacing an extracted tooth with an implant or bridge adds significant cost and treatment time.

Root canal treatment saves your tooth, maintains your natural bite, and costs less than extraction followed by replacement. For most patients, it's the sensible choice.

The Modern Root Canal Process

Initial Assessment

When you come to Bella Dental with tooth pain, our team takes X-rays to confirm infection and assess the extent of damage. We examine the tooth thoroughly and discuss your symptoms.

If root canal treatment is needed, we explain exactly what's involved, how long it will take, and what to expect during recovery. For anxious patients, we discuss options for managing dental phobia and ensuring your comfort throughout.

The Treatment Itself

Root canal treatment Bromley begins with local anaesthetic. This is crucial—you shouldn't feel pain during the procedure. We make sure you're completely numb before starting.

Once you're comfortable, we access the infected pulp through a small opening in the tooth. Using fine instruments, we carefully remove all infected tissue from inside the tooth and its root canals. These canals are tiny—sometimes smaller than a hair—so the process requires precision and patience.

After removing the infection, we clean and disinfect the empty space thoroughly. This step is vital for preventing reinfection. Some cases require medication inside the tooth between appointments, though many root canal treatments are completed in a single visit.

Once we're satisfied the infection is completely cleared, we fill the root canals with a rubber-like material that seals them permanently. A standard filling closes the access opening in the tooth.

After Treatment

You'll have some mild sensitivity for a few days after root canal treatment, similar to what you'd experience after a regular filling. Over-the-counter painkillers usually handle any discomfort easily.

The intense pain from the infection? That's gone immediately. Most patients report feeling significantly better even before the anaesthetic wears off, simply because the pressure from infection has been relieved.

When Crowns Are Recommended

After root canal treatment, teeth sometimes need crowns for protection. This isn't always necessary—it depends on which tooth was treated and how much natural structure remains.

Back teeth that do heavy chewing usually need crowns because root canal treatment removes some internal structure, making the tooth more prone to fracture. Front teeth often don't require crowns unless they're significantly weakened.

Dr Boulis assesses each case individually. If a crown is recommended, our on-site laboratory creates restorations that protect your tooth while looking completely natural. For complex cases requiring both root canal treatment and advanced restorative work, Dr Boulis's specialist expertise ensures optimal long-term results.

Signs You Might Need Root Canal Treatment

Don't wait for unbearable pain. These symptoms suggest you should book an appointment quickly:

  • Severe toothache that throbs or keeps you awake
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the stimulus is removed
  • Discolouration of a tooth, particularly darkening or grey tones
  • Swelling in your gum near a painful tooth
  • Tender lymph nodes in your neck
  • Recurring or persistent pimple on your gum
  • Bad taste in your mouth that won't go away

The sooner you get treatment, the better. Early intervention often means simpler treatment and faster recovery.

Emergency Appointments Available

Dental infections don't wait for convenient times. At Bella Dental, we offer same-day and weekend emergency appointments for situations requiring urgent care.

If you're experiencing severe tooth pain, swelling, or other signs of infection, call us. Our team will fit you in quickly and provide relief. Nobody should endure days of pain waiting for treatment.

The Phobia-Friendly Approach

We understand dental anxiety is real and affects many people. Our team, including Alice and Donatela, whom patients consistently praise for their compassionate care, creates a comfortable environment where nervous patients feel genuinely supported.

If dental visits make you anxious, let us know when you book your appointment. We'll take extra time to explain everything before we start, check in with you throughout the procedure, and ensure you feel in control. You can signal at any time if you need a break.

For patients with severe dental phobia, we can discuss sedation options that make treatment easier while maintaining your safety and comfort.

What Patients Actually Say

The gap between root canal reputation and reality becomes obvious when you talk to patients who've actually had the treatment recently.

Most report that the procedure itself was far less uncomfortable than they expected. Many say the relief of having the infection treated far outweighs any mild discomfort during recovery. And virtually everyone agrees the experience was nothing like the horror stories they'd heard.

Looking After Your Treated Tooth

Once your root canal treatment is complete and any necessary crown is placed, your tooth needs the same care as your other teeth. Brush twice daily, floss regularly, and attend routine check-ups.

Treated teeth can last decades—often the rest of your life—with proper care. They function normally, look natural, and once healed, cause no problems whatsoever.

Don't Let Fear Delay Treatment

Dental infections get worse without treatment, never better. The pain intensifies. The infection spreads. What could have been straightforward root canal treatment might require more complex intervention if you wait too long.

Modern root canal treatment is genuinely manageable. The procedure relieves pain rather than causing it. And saving your natural tooth is worth the brief discomfort of treatment.

Experiencing tooth pain? Don't delay—book an emergency appointment today and save your natural tooth. Call Bella Dental on 020 8050 5942 or visit us at 52 High Street, Bromley. Relief is closer than you think.

I am in the process of having my second implant here as well as composite bonding. I've just got to have the crown fitted in a few weeks time. Donatela and Michael are very friendly and Michael explains everything for you so you know what is happening and when it will happen. Despite warnings of possible swelling after the implant I have found the whole process easy and painless and would recommend Bella Dental to anyone thinking of having an implant.

I saw Dr Bulis today for an emergency dental care, he was an absolutely fantastic dental surgeon.who was thorough and very knowledgeable. The dental centre is prestine and has state of the art facilities. He patiently talked me through my plan and allowed me options. Mine was a complex case and I am definitely coming back for implants and other dental work. He even has a lab in the practice who can make the teeth in very short time, I really thank my lucky stars for having met him today and cannot recommend him highly enough.
